Glade Church is committed to reaching out to our local and worldwide community. Here are some regular ministries that we support. Please contact Scott Bailey if you’d like to suggest an additional ministry!
We collect CFL light bulbs and alkaline batteries at church for drop-off at local recycling stations.
Glade Church is reaching beyond Blacksburg to support food pantries throughout the New River Valley in addition to our local Interfaith Food Pantry. We rotate the recipients for our donations on a seasonal basis. They include the Giving Tree at Fieldstone UMC, Montgomery County Emergency Assistance Program (MCEAP), Pulaski County Emergency Assistance, Giles County Emergency Assistance, the Montgomery County Christmas Store, and the 209 Manna pantry for VT students.
Blacksburg Refugee Partnership
A coalition of local individuals as well as faith and community organizations has formed a partnership to host a family of Syrian refugees in Blacksburg. We believe that our open, generous community could welcome at least one refugee family. We are working with Commonwealth Catholic Charities in Roanoke who are one of a small number of organizations that works with the US state department to resettle refugees. The refugee family will have undergone thorough vetting processes from both the US government and the UN. At this point, just about 100 people from Blacksburg and surrounding regions are participating, but it’s a big job and we could use more help. It is hoped to have the family in Blacksburg by year’s end. Glade plays several critical roles in the project.
New River Valley Glean Team
This initiative is an ecumenical and student partnership in search of leftover food that can be gleaned from fields and donated to those in need. One of its unique events is a "potato drop" that distributes an entire tractor trailer of potatoes from Maine.
We partner with the EZ Clean Laundromat in Christiansburg on the first Thursday evening and third Saturday morning every month. Anyone in need can do laundry for free! Our committee meets on the first Monday of the month to plan and raise funds.. Please click on the title link to see our special page on this project.
To Our House
Glade Church is a host church for To Our House homeless men's shelter in the New River Valley. We work intensely to welcome these men into our church for a week: preparing meals, driving the van, hanging out, and sleeping overnight at the church with them.
Bloomin’ and Broomin’ Earth Day Cleanup
Glade Church participates in the countywide Earth Day cleanup. We usually walk along the Shenandoah Trail behind the Main Street Food Lion and along Patrick Henry Drive.
