A Thought for Ash Wednesday

Don’t forget…Ash Wednesday Worship tonight at 7:00.

May this be the way we begin our Lenten journey together.  Let us ask the real questions of ourselves.

“Did I offer peace today?  Did I bring a smile to someone’s face?  Did I say words of healing?  Did I let go of my anger and resentment?  Did I forgive?  Did I love?  These are the real questions.” –Henri Nouwen

Poem for the Day as We Look Toward Lent

Called to Become
From Edwina Gateley, There Was No Path So I Trod One(1996, 2013)

You are called to become
A perfect creation.
No one is called to become
Who you are called to be.
It does not matter
How short or tall
Or thick-set or slow
You may be.
It does not matter
Whether you sparkle with life
Or are as silent as a still pool.
Whether you sing your song aloud
Or weep alone in darkness.
It does not matter
Whether you feel loved and admired
Or unloved and alone
For you are called to become
A perfect creation.
No one’s shadow
Should cloud your becoming.
No one’s light
Should dispel your spark.
For the Lord delights in you.
Jealously looks upon you
And encourages with gentle joy
Every movement of the Spirit
Within you.
Unique and loved you stand.
Beautiful or stunted in your growth
But never without hope and life.
For you are called to become
A perfect creation.
This becoming may be
Gentle or harsh.
Subtle or violent.
But it never ceases.
Never pauses or hesitates.
Only is—
Creative force—
Calling you
Calling you to become
A perfect creation.

And They Saw God’s Glory

This Sunday is the last Sunday before Lent begins…believe it or not.  In the church calendar, this Sunday is known as Transfiguration Sunday.  The Gospel passage from the lectionary is Luke 9:28-43, the story of Jesus’ time on the mountain with Peter, James, and John in which the disciples see Jesus changed from normal everyday Jesus to one clothed in dazzling white, with his face changed.  They “saw his glory”.

I’m wondering if you have seen Jesus’ glory.  Do you have stories from your own life when you have looked into someone’s face and seen God’s glory reflected there or situations when the same old same old has become extraordinary because you became aware of God’s presence?  If so, would you be willing to share those stories with me this week?  I want my sermon to talk about transfiguration and transformation among us.  You can send me the stories at pastorsusan@gladeucc.org.

Keep the eyes of your heart open.  You may just see God’s glory this week.

Worship Cancelled for January 24

Given that the parking lot will be an icy mess in the morning and many neighborhood roads are still covered in snow, even in town, we have cancelled Radical Conversations and worship for this Sunday.  Stay warm and dry!  And all you young ones and young ones at heart have fun playing in the snow.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day 2016

What are you doing to honor the memory and legacy of Dr. King this weekend? Several Glade members attended the fourth annual Dialogue on Race on Saturday morning. If you weren’t able to join us, consider attending the NAACP Celebration, which will be 3:00 on Sunday at Asbury United Methodist Church in Christiansburg. Or simply spend some time in prayer for those who still face institutional racism in our country and in thanks for those churches who have worked against white privilege in the past. What an important weekend this is!

Volunteer in January

Please consider volunteering at one of our many January events. Follow the links to sign up!

Laundry Love will take place on Monday, January 11, and on Saturday, January 23. Click the link to sign up for a one-hour shift. You will get to visit and socialize with the patrons of E-Z Way Laundry in Christiansburg and provide the quarters for the machines. It’s easy, fun, and important! Bari, Susan, Jacob, are among those who can provide more information for potential volunteers.

The second annual Potato Drop will be on January 16. The NRV Glean Team is looking for volunteers who can move fifty pound bags of potatoes into the vehicles of hunger relief agencies. Katie can provide more information if you can help.

The fourth annual Dialogue on Race will take place in Christiansburg from 10 AM until 2 PM on January 16. It will feature a panel on “The Confederate Battle Flag: Symbol of Heritage or Hatred?” It’s an important event open to diverse people, with diverse views, from all over Montgomery County. Judy and Katie are among those who have participated in the past.

Mary and Joseph with the Menagerie

Glade kids learning about the birth of Jesus.  These “wise men” are astonished and delighted when they find Jesus in the stable.  And check out this one where one of the “wise men” comes for a visit.  I think Mary was delighted to see “him”.

Christmas Eve Worship

Join us as we worship and celebrate the birth of Christ on Christmas Eve at 5:30 p.m.  We will sing, pray, and listen as God speaks God’s word anew.  We will light candles in the darkness because the Light is born into the darkness and the darkness shall not overcome it.  Alleluia!

Leslie Brooks’ Christmas Concert This Friday Night

Want a great way to remind your heart and soul of the real reason to celebrate Christmas?  Join Leslie Brooks and Lanae Hall for a Christmas concert entitled “I Remember December” this Friday night at 7 p.m.  The songs they will sing celebrate family, home, and the miracle of Christ’s birth.  It will be a wonderful way to focus our hearts and minds on what is important during this season.  Join us for great music and a time of fellowship and cookies to follow.  This would also be low key way to introduce new people to the wonderful place and people that we all know Glade Church to be.  So bring a friend…or two!

No One Fell Off the Turnip Truck

We had a great time gleaning turnips yesterday at a beautiful farm in Riner.  We helped pick enough turnips to feed 600 people.  I am so grateful for the farmer who plants turnips in a field every year for just this purpose, for the Society of St. Andrew that makes the gleaning happen, and for the folks from Glade, Fieldstone United Methodist Church, and an engineering fraternity that were there to pick yesterday afternoon.

‘Taters ‘n Turnips

We have two opportunities to help secure fresh produce for hungry people in our area this week.

Glade has the opportunity to join the planning committee for the second annual NRV Potato Drop this March. Please email Katie (katie.lucot@gmail.com) if you would like to represent our church in planning this event, which will distribute 42,000 pounds of potatoes! The first committee meeting is Wednesday.

Also, on Sunday, November 15, we will help to harvest turnips in Riner. Please join us anytime after worship until about 4:00 pm. Local and regional food pantries take turns receiving the turnips that will be harvested every weekend until Thanksgiving, and we’ll pick a trailer load or more while we are there!
