Pool Party and Potluck Lunch

Don’t forget to bring your bathing suits and towels on Sunday!  Following worship, we will head to Normie’s house in Salem for a potluck lunch and a pool party!  Contrary to popular belief, there will not be a swimsuit competition as part of the afternoon’s festivities.  Also, bring a dish to go along with BBQ and slaw, turkey burgers, and hotdogs.  It will be a great way to celebrate the end of summer together!

Bible Study

Bible Study meets Saturday, August 13 from 10:30-11:30 a.m. at Glade Church. We will study the New Testament book of James in case you want to read it before we begin, but that is not necessary to attend and be an active participant in the Bible discussion! For those who are not early risers,  I’ll have some donuts as well as coffee and tea to get our blood, sugar, and minds flowing!

The Passing of Conference Minister, John Deckenback

The Passing of Conference Minister, John Deckenback

It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of our Conference Minister, Rev. Dr. John Deckenback. John was found unresponsive early Tuesday evening, July 19, in the Catonsville, Maryland Conference office and attempts to revive him were unsuccessful.

DeckenbackJohn came to the Central Atlantic Conference in May 1992.  He served as the Conference Minister and CEO of the Conference.  He also served on several national boards.  He enjoyd spending time with his grandchildren, trains, gardening, running and history.  John was married to the Rev. Carolyn Robert

As we begin to grapple with his death, we offer prayers for his wife, Rev. Carolyn Roberts, and his family. John faithfully served this Conference for twenty-four years, and his loss to us is immeasurable. We are in shock and in mourning, even as we gratefully reflect upon his pastoral leadership. We thank God for the life of John Deckenback.

Sunshine iMAGES

Local artists Donald and Joanna Sunshine’s art is featured at the Glade Gallery in Blacksburg between July 24 and mid-September. There is a reception for the artists on Sunday, July 24 from 2:00-3:30 p.m. at Glade Church, located at 1600 Glade Road in Blacksburg.

Donald is a Professor Emeritus of Architecture at Virginia Tech. His art has been included in exhibits at Chicago’s Art Institute and Museum of Science and Industry, as well as exhibits in Florida, Hawaii, and Virginia. When asked “. . . how long have you been painting?” Donald answers “About a thousand years.” Then when asked “How long did this painting take you to do?” He replied, “A lifetime.”   “And is this a hobby or a job?” “It’s a way of life.”

Asked about her art, Joanna said, ”More than 50 years ago I acquired my first loom, or rather pieces of a loom discovered in a junk yard. Since then there have been floor looms, table looms, back strap looms, inkle looms, barn looms, tapestry looms, and even a 2-story tall frame loom.”

Joanna said, “Bypassing the craft of traditional weaving, I am passionate about experimentation and discovery. I not only use fiber in my art, but also use handmade papers, objects from nature, and found objects. I seek to transform unlikely materials into art.”

Joanna’s work has been selected for many juried exhibits including The Virginia Museum of Fine Art, The Chrysler Museum, Savannah College of Art and Design, University of Illinois, and the Art Galleries of Virginia Tech.

When asked why she creates her art, Joanna answered: “For me the satisfaction of the work results from the doing . . . the interest is in the search and experimentation of technique, media, and spatial elements, spontaneity, investigation, intuition,   surprise, and doing . . . always doing.”

Fun at Floyd PRIDE Parade

A group of us had a great time at the Floyd PRIDE Parade on Saturday.  Elk Spur UCC in Fancy Gap was there as well.  It was wonderful to walk with some of you in solidarity, saying that God loves all of us, just as God has created us to be…good and beautiful, each one!

Laundry Love sign ups open through December!

We still have room for volunteers in our next Laundry Love. Sign up here!   In fact, you can sign up for any Laundry Love event through the end of this year! Don’t worry about forgetting; the Volunteer Spot system will remind you and let you change your commitment if plans change. After signing up, you will receive an automatic email reminder, but your email will be kept private to the Laundry Love organizers.

Laundry Love is a regular initiative in which Glade volunteers pay for and assist with the laundry of those who need financial assistance or simply a friendly face. We work with the EZ Way Laundromat on Roanoke Street in Christiansburg.

UCC webinars on white privilege this week

The UCC is offering five free webinars this week, and you are invited! They are in advance of a complete adult curriculum on white privilege to be released later this summer. Will you join Katie in in learning about them by attending one webinar?

The webinars will be held at 1 pm each day and can be viewed afterward as well. You can “order” them at this link. You’ll have to “add to cart” and “check out”, but they are FREE!

Please also tell Katie which day you watched: She would love to share take-aways as we plan a session for others in our church community.

Prayer Service Tonight at 7:00

When I read the horrible news yesterday about the mass shooting in Orlando, I was heartbroken, sick, angry, and a host of other emotions.  With my LGBTQ brothers and sisters, I cried out, “How long, O Lord?”  With my Muslim brothers and sisters, I cried out, “How long, O Lord?”  And, I also felt helpless.  All of these feelings are still engulfing me.

At times like these, I find it incredibly important to gather with my church family so that we might hold one another up with God’s love and remind each other that hate, violence, and evil do not have the last word.

So, tonight, we will gather at 7:00 for a prayer service.  We will sing, pray, be silent, read scripture, and worship our God together, even in the midst of our pain and sorrow.  Please spread the word for everyone is welcome here with us.

reVision Summit Gathering

On Saturday, about 40 of us spent our morning at the reVision Summit Gathering.  We were thrilled that so many folks could be there and that there was so much energy, creativity, and faithfulness in the room.

After coming up with lots of ideas that we were hearing from God over the last several months in small groups, those in attendance chose which of the ideas they felt called to pursue with their energy and gifts.  The four ideas that we decided to carry forward are:

  • Rejuvenating/rethinking our focus on the arts (visual, musical, drama, etc)
  • Looking at our worship to find if there are ways to craft it so that it better speaks to who we are as Glade Church or possibly providing different worship opportunities during the week
  • Focusing on social justice issues and how we might respond in new ways as well as improving/growing the ways we already serve including Laundry Love and To Our House
  • Examining our church identity as a progressive Christian voice in the NRV and working toward ways we can communicate our identity in the community (church property including signage, website, communication in the community, etc)

Four teams formed around each idea.  Those teams will now pursue the ideas to see where they might lead.  If you would like to join one of the groups, please let Susan V. know so she can let you know the first meeting date for that group.

It was an exciting morning, and we look forward to seeing where the Holy Spirit leads us now.

Come, Holy Spirit!

Join us at Glade tomorrow as we worship together on Pentecost Sunday, celebrating the Holy Spirit blowing mightily through the disciples and through us.
